Five Star Bank, Five Star Flower City Community Room, Rochester, NY, 14620, United States.

Latinas Unidas has teamed up with the Monroe County Department of Public Health to help address the opioid epidemic in our area for a Cafe Con Leche event: "The Opioid Crisis, Preparing for Those in Need".

Our guest speaker will be Deputy Commissioner, Marielena Vélez de Brown, MD, MPH.

Dr. Vélez de Brown will cover topics such as:

  • What is an addiction?
  • What do addictive substances do to the brain of a person who uses them?
  • The national and local context surrounding the opioid overdose epidemic,
  • Steps that are being taken to address the current crisis,
  • How to identify an opioid overdose,
  • How to administer Narcan/naloxone, the nasal spray medication that can reverse an opioid overdose,
  • and any questions you have about the topic.

Dinner will be provided by Five Star Bank and refreshments by Wegmans. Each person who attends will get a free kit containing 2 doses of the nasal medication at the end of the presentation.

Latinas Unidas is a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting Latina women from different segments of the Greater Rochester Area, who share common concerns and interest affecting Latina Women. Café Con Leche is Latinas Unidas signature networking series. Held several times throughout the year, these events are an opportunity to bring to our members and guests a place to make contact with like-minded women, learn and share interesting and current information in a friendly setting. Since 2002, Latinas Unidas has awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to non-traditional college-age Latinas enrolled in higher education or in a formal training. The scholarships have had significant impact in the lives of the recipients; helping them overcome financial barriers related to tuition or education-related costs.
